The Short Van (It's Not A Doka)
One of the things you start doing when you own a Vanagon is scanning junk yards, farms/barns, and anywhere else for other vans in hopes of either scoring some parts or even a cheap van. At least...we do that, anyway. In Baja it was no different and in addition to getting a few spare parts, we made the ultimate find: the short van. Here's how it went down:
We're driving along the 1 with Greg, Katie, and Johnny (Crepe Attack) when we see a junkyard in the distance.
Peter: "Keep your eyes peeled."
A few seconds go by...
Shruthi: "A VAN!"
Peter: "A Westy?"
Shruthi: "No, it was a...a short van."
Peter: "You mean a Doka?"
Shruthi: "No, it's not a Doka, it was...I don't know, it was a short van."
Over the walkie talkie:
Peter: "Shruthi saw a short van in that junk yard back there so we're gonna turn around, ok?"
Katie: "Was it a Doka?"
Shruthi: "NO, it's NOT a Doka! It's a...short van!"
We make a U-turn and head back to check it out. Lo and behold, it was a short van. I mean, I've seen long/extended vans before, but never a short van. "See, I told you. I know what a Doka looks like", Shruthi says.
As we stare in awe at this short, weird van, Greg starts asking the guys in the junk yard about it. Turns out it's a little project of theirs that they've been working on. It doesn't run (no engine in there) but they're working on it and it's not for sale. We couldn't even take any parts off of it. Drats! So we left empty handed but not without a funny story to tell. So there you have it, the short story of the short van (it's not a Doka).
